Every Messy Studios piece is individually handmade rather than mass-produced. Our pricing reflects the materials, time, craftsmanship, and care that go into creating each item.
1. Materials
The type of yarn used plays an important role in the final price of each product. Different yarns vary in cost, weight, texture, and the amount of time required to complete a piece.
T-Shirt Yarn Collection
Our signature collection is handcrafted using premium t-shirt yarn (85% cotton, 10% recycled fibres, 5% elastane). This yarn creates the bold, chunky texture that defines many of our everyday bags and accessories.
-
Soft Studio Bloom Charms from R30
-
Bags from R110–R350
Acrylic Yarn Collection
Our acrylic yarn collections are lightweight, soft, and often feature more intricate stitch patterns. Although the yarn itself is more affordable, these pieces typically require more time to crochet, making labour a larger part of the final price.
-
Products from R90–R250
Melange Yarn Collection
Melange yarn is a premium fibre that creates a beautifully textured finish with subtle colour variation. While this yarn is more expensive, it generally works up faster than finer yarns, allowing larger pieces to be completed more efficiently.
-
Products from R200–R400
Product prices may vary depending on the amount of yarn required, stitch complexity, finishing details, and whether the item forms part of a limited collection or a one-of-one release.
2. Time & Craftsmanship
Every product is crocheted entirely by hand by a single maker.
The time required to complete each piece is factored into the final price using an hourly labour rate of R40–R80 per hour, depending on the complexity of the stitch pattern, design, and finishing work.
3. Packaging & Branding
Every order is carefully wrapped using branded packaging to create a boutique unboxing experience.
A standard packaging and branding cost of approximately R30 per order is included in the pricing of every product.
4. Business Costs
Product pricing also contributes towards the ongoing operation of Messy Studios, including:
-
Shopify subscription and website maintenance
-
Payment processing and transaction fees
-
Equipment and crochet tools
-

-

5. Limited Production
Messy Studios operates using a small-batch production model.
New collections are released on the 1st, 15th, and 25th of every month. Most colourways are produced in quantities of one to four pieces, while selected designs are released as One of One creations.
Working in small batches allows us to maintain quality, introduce new ideas regularly, and ensure every collection feels fresh and unique. As a one-person business, this approach also gives us the freedom to continually explore new designs, textures, and seasonal collections without producing large quantities of the same item.
Our Commitment
Our goal is to create handmade pieces that are thoughtfully designed, fairly priced, and made to last.
When you purchase from Messy Studios, you're supporting slow craftsmanship, independent design, and products created with intention—not factory production.
Every stitch is made by hand.
Every collection is produced in small numbers.
Every piece is made to be collected.
